
Through the process, the community expressed their vision for the park to attract a multi-generation of users.

The project has been awarded funding from the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Grant Program- Round 4 (Prop 68) in the amount of $7,082,000. Courts at Southgate Park have been converted to Pickleball, which is a fun and rapidly growing sport played on a smaller court with a lower net, paddles and a lightweight ball. This project provides for the renovation of 18 existing tennis courts at various locations throughout the District. Both of these will become a new neighborhood park. This is the one of three adjoining acquisitions for the Ashland area, along with adjoining property fronting onto East 14th St.

The designs will be confirmed in late 2021 with construction projected for Spring 2023.

The initial concept plan for the community center has the following spaces: 4-5 multi-purpose rooms, a fitness/exercise/dance studio, a Pre-K Classroom for up to 24 students with attached outdoor play area, administrative offices, and a reception area with two-story lobby space facing onto East 14 th Street. Providing an amenity for the entire Ashland area, RCD will build a new 12,300 square foot community center, on the first two floors immediately fronting onto East 14th Street. In 2019, HARD agreed to collaborate with Resource for Community Development (RCD) Housing, Berkeley, CA, in the development of a new 7-story affordable housing facility, at East 14th Street and 162th Ave., with creation of a new community center. Construction is anticipated to begin early summer 2022. In select locations, programming will be modified to include picnic areas. These courts will be refreshed with new paving, paint, surfacing, furnishings, drinking fountains, backstops, hoops, nets, fencing, storage, and other features. The courts are primarily basketball, but will also include tennis, pickleball overlaid on tennis, Bankshot Station, and a flexible multi-court for futsal, rollerblading, and open-ended fun.
